Synopsis:
True love is shrouded in secrets and lies in the enchanting second book in the #1 New York Times bestselling Infernal Devices Trilogy, prequel to the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series.
In the magical underworld of Victorian London, Tessa Gray has found safety with the Shadowhunters. But that safety proves fleeting when it becomes clear that the mysterious Magister will stop at nothing to use Tessa’s powers for his own dark ends.
With the help of the handsome, tortured Will and the devoted Jem, Tessa discovers that the Magister’s war on the Shadowhunters is deeply personal and fueled by revenge. To unravel the secrets of the past, the trio journeys from mist-shrouded Yorkshire to a manor house that holds untold horrors. When they encounter a clockwork demon bearing a warning for Will, they realize that the Magister knows their every move—and that one of their own has betrayed them.
Tessa is drawn more and more to Jem, though her longing for Will continues to unsettle her. But something is changing in Will. Could finding the Magister free Will from his secrets and give Tessa answers about who she really is? As their search leads to deadly peril, Tessa learns that secrets and lies can corrupt even the purest heart.
My thoughts:
This books starts fairly soon after the last one ended. Unlike the other book it went right into the story and was not slow in the beginning. The story progresses nicely and just keeps getting better. A lot of things will be explained in this one what we didn’t know from the last book.
It has some pretty heartbreaking parts, but also some humor and ‘make you feel good ‘moments as well as betrayal. It is a rollercoaster ride all the way through the book, with many twists and some to "me" shocking events/moments.
The love triangle between Tessa, Will and Jem continues to grow but Tessa kind of makes a choice at the end ;) I wont tell which one tho and I’m sure it can change in the last book.
We learn more about each of the Charters .We get to know why Will is the way he is and acts the way he acts towards everyone. Tessa is still trying to figure out what she is. And she makes some shocking discoveries. Jem, is still fighting his “illness” but is mainly concerned for Tessa and not himself. Some major things are happening with Jessie.
We get to know Sophie better, and I have to say I really, really like her. Some new or semi knew characters also come into play: The Lightwoods, especially the brothers: Gideon and Gabriel. Well there were mentioned in the first book but in this one we get to know more about them. I loved the development between Charlotte and Henry. Magnus Bane turns out to be a great character to. I hope we get to know even more of him.
This was a truly amazing book. I loved it even more than the first one and can’t wait to find out how it all will end.
Some of my favorite quotes:
“So you are suggesting we take a train up to York, meet a ninety-year-old man, leap on him, and yank out his hair? I’m sure the Clave will be ecstatic” ~Will
“ If I was harsh with yoy, it was because I cannot bear to see you treat yourself as if you are worth nothing. Whatever part you might act to the contrary, I see you as you really are, my blood brother. Not just better than you pretend to be, but better than most people could hope to be. You are worth everything, Will” ~ Jem to Will
