Nevernight - Jay Kristoff

In a land where three suns almost never set, a fledgling killer joins a school of assassins, seeking vengeance against the powers who destroyed her family.

Daughter of an executed traitor, Mia Corvere is barely able to escape her father’s failed rebellion with her life. Alone and friendless, she hides in a city built from the bones of a dead god, hunted by the Senate and her father’s former comrades. But her gift for speaking with the shadows leads her to the door of a retired killer, and a future she never imagined.

Now, Mia is apprenticed to the deadliest flock of assassins in the entire Republic—the Red Church. If she bests her fellow students in contests of steel, poison and the subtle arts, she’ll be inducted among the Blades of the Lady of Blessed Murder, and one step closer to the vengeance she desires. But a killer is loose within the Church’s halls, the bloody secrets of Mia’s past return to haunt her, and a plot to bring down the entire congregation is unfolding in the shadows she so loves.

Will she even survive to initiation, let alone have her revenge?

4.5★

I finished the book yesterday and I’m still not sure what to say. Other than I LOVED  it ……A LOT.

I must admit I started this book like three or maybe even four times in hard cover but never made it passed maybe 50 pages. The writing and the footnotes, a lot of footnotes in the beginning made it somewhat confusing and hard to focus for me. So, I got the audio and I loved it. I was able to get the story without the confusion with the footnotes and such. It was so worth it.

I loved this complex, yet oddly simple world that Kristoff created. I should say that this book is defiantly not YA and has lots of swearing, blood, murder and some steamy times in it. That being said, while we get all that we still get plenty of humor and relief, it doesn’t feel all that dark, even though it still is.

I loved the setting of the school. Like Hogwarts for assassins, just more blood and gore.

I also loved all the side characters, especially Mr. Kindly the not cat with, no eyes. He is pretty much her companion or familiar throughout the book. There is more to it some we find out other things not so much.

I loved following Mia around, to see her discover herself, who or what she might be….. Learn more about herself and even her feeling she claims she doesn’t have.

Of course we meet some pretty awesome other people, some good, some bad, some we not sure yet. BUT, what a ride and we are getting thrown for loops, like crazy. There are some pretty wicked plot twist for sure.

As a side note, this is a book about assassins and I should have not been so surprised by so many deaths, which yeah I was a bit in an odd way. But some of those death hurt more than others

Overall I’m not sure what to say without spoiling it. But it was crazy, fun, funny and bloody with a side of tears and betrayal. Also if you like me a tried the book version and couldn’t get through it , try the audio , book. Worked like a charm for me and I’m not a huge fan for audio in general, but this one was great for me.

I rate it 4.5★ just because I had such a hard time to get into the book.
