In a city full of vampires, trouble never sleeps.

At the tender age of twenty-seven, Merit became a sword-wielding vampire. Since then, she’s become the protector of her House, watched Chicago nearly burn to the ground, and seen her Master fall and rise. Now she’ll see her mettle—and her metal—tested like never before.

It started with two . . . Two rogues vanishing without a trace. Someone is targeting Chicago’s vampires, and anyone could be next. With their house in peril, Merit and her Master, the centuries-old Ethan Sullivan, must race to stop the disappearances. But as they untangle a web of secret alliances and ancient evils, they realize their foe is more familiar, and more powerful, than they could have ever imagined.

my though

After the last few books being hit and miss some more than other I was nervous starting this book. But also a little annoyed.

I have to say this book was better than the last few and we finally getting some answers but not all of course.

Merit and Ethan are back together, more or less, but of course not everything is rainbows and sunshine for them. That was partly because of Ethan AGAIN. Ugh I’m getting really frustrated with his character. I like him and I don’t like him at the same time. I really want to love him but he makes that difficult with acting like a freaking pouting teenage girl at times.

Anyways, back to this book. We have a lot going on.

The house is spreading for the GP, but there are still so many things that can go wrong and of course go wrong, because the GP is a bag of dicks and wouldn’t just let them go. No they do everything they can to bring the house down once and for all. They go as far as trying to start a war between the house and other sups. Luckily and thanks to Merit they have other allies that are willing to help as much as they can without being caught in the middle.

Vampires are being killed and the hunt is on for the killer, but as usual and gas lots of twists.

We learn more about the RG and meet more members as Merit goes further with her gig with them. Things do not go as planned and with Merit being just a tad but stupid at times, it risks her life and friendships and maybe relationships. It be interesting to see in further books how this all turns out. I think the RG is going to be a bigger part of the series from now on.

The pack is still dealing with Mallory, and I’m not sure how I feel about that. I think she just got off way too easy for what she done and it is all being down played a little.

We get to see Jeff more in this book and even find out what kind of shifter he is ;)

Merit, seem to be back and better than a few books ago which was good, but she still had her stupid and whiny moments.

Ethan is well Ethan and deserves to be smacked around a bit. While I liked him better than in previous books I’m still not 100% convinced of him.

Mallory, well like I said I think she gets away with things to easy but we shall see what will happen.

Catcher, I felt for him and loved him also be interesting to see where things go for him.

Still love Luc and Lindsey and wish we could get more of them, the same goes for the Keene pack.

The same goes for Jonah, I just really want to see more of him he seems like a much better than Ethan but almost to good for Merit.

Overall, this book was great, plenty of action, humor, suspense, twists and turns. The only down part I found was that it seemed to have a few pages fillers. Like for example I didn’t really need a two page description of Ethan’s closet, other than that it was better than a few of the previous books.

I rate it at 4 ★but not a strong 4★

 Some of my favorite quotes:

“Please stop calling me that. You’re still officially the Master.”

“Oh, I know,” Malik said. “But much like Merit, I find it amusing to irritate you.”

As Malik walked down the hallway and around the corner, Ethan turned his pointed gaze on me.

I shrugged innocently. “I can’t help it if I’m a trendsetter.”

***

“Go get him, tiger, I silently told him. Shouldn’t you be working? he asked. Yes, I said frankly. But the world outside these walls is depressing, and I need the distraction. You may begin impressing me now.”

***

“As I'm not currently being chased, I see no need to run.”

***

“I looked at Jonah. “I’m still learning who you are. And you’re my partner, so I appreciate that you’re willing to take a punch for me.” I walked to Ethan and glared up at him. “But you know better than this, Ethan Sullivan.”
