This is a world divided by blood – red or silver.
The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change.
That is, until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power.
Fearful of Mare’s potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime.
But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance – Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart.
I think this was one of those you like or you hate it books.
I really enjoyed but really didn’t see where they came up with “Graceling meets Selection. I thought it was more a mix of Red Rising meets Katniss Everdeen and a touch of X-men.
I enjoyed the book, it had action, a touch of romance a HUGE plot twist. It was also fairly dark and a sad dystopian world unless you had silver blood and powers. I liked the characters or well their writing, most of the people3 are pretty nasty.
I liked Mare, most of the time she had her moment s when she was pretty dumb or selfish and got people hurt or worse. But overall I enjoyed her and could relate to her.
In the end she just did what she thought was the right thing to help the reds and her friends and family. I thought she did “adept” pretty fast to her new but also brutal world as a silver princess. With the queen having it out for her.
We do have a sort of love triangle going on and I was not really sure who I liked more.
Both Maven and Cal have sweet and romantic sides going on but both also have a mean and evil streak in them. I was not sure if it was because the way they got raised or if it was just them.
The end was kind of shocking and we get to see a whole new site of everything …….. I’m really curious to see what will happen next and I’m really glad I already ordered the second book.
Overall I really enjoyed this dark and surprising journey of Mare Barrow.
I rate it 4 ★
